這是《紅樓夢》的當代通行本（1982-），前八十回以最接近原著的 《脂硯齋重評石頭記》 為底本，後四十回以 《紅樓夢》程高本  為底本。 《紅樓夢》(石頭記) 最初以八十回手抄本形式流傳，目前所見最早的抄本出現於1754年。著名抄本包括： 《脂硯齋重評石頭記》甲戌本 （存十六回） 《脂硯齋重評石頭記》庚辰本 （存七十八回） 《脂硯齋重評石頭記》己卯本 （存四十一回） 《戚蓼生序本石頭記》 （八十回全本） 程偉元、高鶚於1791年出版一百二十回萃文書屋活字 《繡像紅樓夢》程甲本 ；第二年出版 《繡像紅樓夢》程乙本 。 在之後的一百多年中，各種  重刊《繡像紅樓夢》程甲本  一直是《紅樓夢》的主流通行本，例如， 嘉慶東觀閣梓行《繡像紅樓夢》 。程乙本的影響很小。 “程乙本” 對前80回作了較多的修改，使小說更加通俗化，可讀性比較高。由於胡適的大力推廣，民國時 《紅樓夢》程乙本 一度成為《紅樓夢》的主流版本，直到1982年人民文學出版社出版了基於《脂硯齋重評石頭記》的新版《紅樓夢》。
