德國傳教士羅存德編輯。本書共有四卷，分為序言、正文，正文部分以英語詞目為主幹，按照衛三畏的正音系統標註廣東方言(Punti)和官話發音，以發音的字母排序，每則英語詞目下有一至數種漢語詞條。本書從美國《韋氏英語辭典》中挑選英語詞條，收錄資料超過五萬筆，以此翻譯的漢字數量則超過六十萬餘個。羅存德除了採用現存的漢語詞彙翻譯英詞，亦新造漢語詞彙，使許多西方當代詞彙得以轉譯成漢語字詞，深入影響近代中國及日本等地的漢語使用方式，並衍生許多後續版本，如井上哲次郎於1884年出版的增訂版。 《英華字典》於1866年10月出版第一冊Part I，以後每年一冊至1869年四冊（Partl-IV）出齊。裝訂形式有四冊分訂本和二冊分訂本以及在日本重新裝訂的一 冊合訂本。
